Chapter Nine

Vanessa

No one ever told me it was possible. I’d heard about true love, mostly from popular media. From fairytales to their 20th century equivalents in romantic comedies, I was entertaining to be sure, but in no way related to my own existence. The fantasy of ‘one true pairing’ was just that. A lovely bit of wishful thinking, with little evidence of it in the real world.

My parents stayed together, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing. At least not in the ‘happily ever after’ way I’d been led to expect. Everyone had their foibles, all of us only human after all. Then I met Devin, and everything changed, not even overnight. That’s what most people say, but it was even faster than that. It had begun when I was still in his office and only grew more intense when we went out to dinner. My libido raising to levels I’d never imagined possible. I wanted him so much. Not just for a night, but for the rest of my life. Forever if such a thing were possible. Happily ever after.

It should have been absurd. I’d only known him a couple of weeks, carnal knowledge sure, but it still struck me odd. That I’d been happier with him than ever before. Even with all my talk about needing time and taking things slow. The fact was, I was falling hard for him. Like a piece of me had fallen into place like a puzzle, and I was finally complete. Little surprise then, that I’d given serious thought to asking Devin to partner with me, and working as the head chef at the restaurant.

No matter how ridiculous it sounded, particularly considering my recent disastrous experience mixing business and my personal life. It would mean asking him to relinquish his position as a corporate powerhouse, that he’d worked so long and hard to maintain, just to cook with some girl he’d been dating for a little while. Even with how wonderful the last two weeks had been.

Then again, he really did have a passion for cooking, and it could be the perfect chance to do what he always wanted. Getting past the initial logic of the situation, it really seemed like a beautiful solution. We would be together, but more than that, he would have a chance to indulge in his passion and do what he’d always loved. I had to at least give it a try, or I knew I would be kicking myself forevermore.

We had arrangements for dinner that night. Devin had used his influence to score a reservation at a restaurant that had turned away the governor when he had shown up for a walk in. No one got in without a reservation, and no one could get a reservation without good reason, as seen by the manager. Who got in and who was turned out based entirely up to his discretion. Something I planned to never do with my place.

It would be a place for everyone. No reservation. No special lounges at the back, or upstairs.
